<span style="font-size: large;"> Kindergarten students created these fun collage robots while learning about shape and reviewing color. </span><br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh7Q2FsM4igYuMrST1-Vcd4_rJ9pUAnDH3_JmvAq2ChuDAnOxda_YozAmapsymm7gQCunZe_NicAwkGZCs5CWpm_QzeD4Yn00uVlnjgyC2BUsDfdk-NQEB9R9ylyNn8V_4QYGWWkwSUi54/s1600/29068416.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh7Q2FsM4igYuMrST1-Vcd4_rJ9pUAnDH3_JmvAq2ChuDAnOxda_YozAmapsymm7gQCunZe_NicAwkGZCs5CWpm_QzeD4Yn00uVlnjgyC2BUsDfdk-NQEB9R9ylyNn8V_4QYGWWkwSUi54/s1600/29068416.jpg" height="320" width="233" /></a><br />
<br />
We started our project by using stamping different sized circles and dots to create a fun background. Students learned that you can paint with more things than a paintbrush. Plastic cups, paper cups, and cotton swabs can be fun painting tools.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK6k8xH5dqmpjv_J3FGfcWcSn4X2qRSKkKXKbhs63hxlVCSd2n0Hs0iCJ9jmqf8rbfJ7Nbu4o7PXH3pLPwHSfH3W8BOzp7co9Zhg5HfFkhyiImQ8AKs56EwhqZef5HtsIQU6cnW-U1rup1/s1600/IMG_1073.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK6k8xH5dqmpjv_J3FGfcWcSn4X2qRSKkKXKbhs63hxlVCSd2n0Hs0iCJ9jmqf8rbfJ7Nbu4o7PXH3pLPwHSfH3W8BOzp7co9Zhg5HfFkhyiImQ8AKs56EwhqZef5HtsIQU6cnW-U1rup1/s1600/IMG_1073.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then students identified the shapes they could use in their robots as they painted them with a solid color. </div>

Students discussed how to change a color's value - to make it lighter and darker. As we discussed what would happen if we added white or black to a color, I demonstrated by mixing the colors and painting on a 12x18 paper that was divided up into 7 sections.<br />
<br />
Students then chose their color and paired up to share paint. They were given their color + black & white. We divided up the paper and students made little notes on each section if they thought they would need the refresher of what colors they were creating.<br />
This was my guide that I hung up for them to see -<br />

Students spent the next two classes putting together their ice cream cones. They first made a stencil for the scoop of ice cream from tagboard to make them all similar in size. We discussed how we liked them better constructed - dark to light or light to dark. Most decided they liked the look of dark to light because the lightest tint looked great next to the darkest shade of the cone. Some chose to go light to dark. They were able to add some sequin "sprinkles" and had to come up with a name for their flavor. </div>

<i>This project was inspired by Susan Tiedemann from Brunswick Acres School in New Jersey. Thanks for your inspiration!</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
1st grade students were learning about the difference between geometric and organic shapes. We discussed where on a lion's face could we use both types of shapes then student began to draw their lions with oil pastels.<br />
<br />
We even enjoyed listening to Katy Perry's "Roar" while we worked. That made it even better!<br />
<br />
When our lions were finished we were not quite done. We talked about what would make us roar. Would we roar when we were feeing happy, sad, mad, silly?<br />
<br />
Using the iPad app <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/morfo/id418900007?mt=8">Morfo</a> students were able to bring their lions to life.<br />
<br />

My favorite construction paper to use with my Elementary students is Pacon's Tru-Ray paper. It's a fade-resistant paper that's great for all kinds of projects. For years I've unwrapped the plastic from the bundles of paper, tossed the plastic in the garbage, but couldn't toss the cover sheet that comes with each pack.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKGgs-J5shRCdZ0O5Y44zN1ywkg6G-vmISc3iqdc2TyYPZyUxu4i1fbndiD6QwzKVo1aq7bN3y2j3LHLMI54ae52zGnIcFDvy5UNuQLUdPfyuHxp3LTaKoNbffwq3wDziFMpBbI8ukW-fO/s1600/52103507.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKGgs-J5shRCdZ0O5Y44zN1ywkg6G-vmISc3iqdc2TyYPZyUxu4i1fbndiD6QwzKVo1aq7bN3y2j3LHLMI54ae52zGnIcFDvy5UNuQLUdPfyuHxp3LTaKoNbffwq3wDziFMpBbI8ukW-fO/s1600/52103507.jpg" height="218" width="320" /></a></div>
That smiling sun face looked up at me each time. I had remembered seeing an example somewhere of this face collaged into an artwork and knew I had to save these up for just the right project.<br />
<br />
<br />
I left this lesson for a couple classes when I had a professional leave day.<br />
<br />
The lesson's a simple one! What could this face be instead of a sun face?<br />
<br />
Students cut out the face and glued it somewhere on a white paper and then went at it with crayons. Their creative problem solving brought a smile to my face when I went through the work the students did while I was away. It kind of made me jealous I wasn't there to see them work on the project. I can imagine what their conversations were as they figured out what they were doing with that smiling face.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Santas in Pajamas</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I generally just continue with my normal lessons during the month of December, however I do love all the excitement the kids have for the holidays. So if we finish with projects the first of December, I will connect the concepts we have been learning about, or will continue to explore in the new year, with something holiday themed.<br />
<div>
<i><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></i>
<i><span style="font-size: large;">These are a few of my favorites this year:</span></i></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Santas in Pajamas - (1st-3rd grade ELL class)</b></div>
<div>
This was actually a formative assessment. I needed to know where their knowledge was on shape and pattern so that I would know where to focus the learning after break. </div>
<div>
We quickly reviewed what a pattern was and students colored a paper with whatever pattern or patterns they could come up with.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPvc5ipsrKu_JkyeCZIl3shmDt-RvOJZheh00nhL8JN35SVFjYnEDConu4r1IPBl_17Qvj0-O3DLy222kNx0XIExxEai9OjdmqBkGLH5vtjOX7qjjqpIcvrguneOs4azig3LAXk8lZFkUU/s1600/IMG_1067.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPvc5ipsrKu_JkyeCZIl3shmDt-RvOJZheh00nhL8JN35SVFjYnEDConu4r1IPBl_17Qvj0-O3DLy222kNx0XIExxEai9OjdmqBkGLH5vtjOX7qjjqpIcvrguneOs4azig3LAXk8lZFkUU/s1600/IMG_1067.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
They then cut the patterned paper into a large triangle and five smaller triangles to create Santa's clothes and a circle for his face. I asked these students if these shapes were geometric or organic shapes as they worked on this. Students added some facial features, cotton balls, buttons, and anything else they wanted to complete their Santas. </div>
<div>
They did look at me strangely when I started singing "Santas in Pajamas are dancing round the tree..." in the tune of <i>Bananas in Pajamas</i>.<br />

<b>Poinsettia Painting - (5th Grade)</b><br />
5th grade students had been working on color theory. One of our objectives for this grade level is for them to understand what complementary colors are and use them in a work of art. The poinsettia sponge painting is perfect project for this. After discussing complementary colors we used sponges and red paint to create the flowers. The sponges were cut into a petal shape.<br />
*In one of my buildings my bag of precut sponges disappeared and I was forced to sacrifice some sponge friends - <i>:( sorry giraffe and donkey!</i><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Students added the complement of red (green) to the background of their flowers. They could put some green in the background, paint it all, paint leaves, it was up to them as long as they showed the complementary color pair. Some details were added to the center and they were done! This is an easy and fun one day project. The results are beautiful and the students understand the contrast that complementary colors present. </div>

If time allows, I usually follow this art class with one where they can experiment with the other complementary color pairs. What happens when the two colors are mixed? Create a mini painting using another two complementary color pairs.</div>

<b>Abstract Trees with Geometric Shapes - (3rd and 4th Grade)</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This project followed our color lesson so we were able to extend our color discussions to talk about contrast. We looked at the color wheel and identified colors that would stand out when put close to each other. We also discussed the difference between Abstract and Realistic Art and Geometric shape when drawing out our picture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Students were thrilled to learn they would be using markers to color in these designs. I guess I don't use them very often in our lessons. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These took a couple art times to finish and students really enjoyed working on them. </div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfx0mksFMN3tmpk16yXQr6I_UCnvm48GiNJxUyuwKIYHa41_LHRha37DuzO3HRpzi_12S01FN-6zAtswlVHsMfQFR8bQEW5TCz_6g6Phzfb_U3lYArI9EHffww0xwIjuHjj_gZNE0jI568/s1600/27315917.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfx0mksFMN3tmpk16yXQr6I_UCnvm48GiNJxUyuwKIYHa41_LHRha37DuzO3HRpzi_12S01FN-6zAtswlVHsMfQFR8bQEW5TCz_6g6Phzfb_U3lYArI9EHffww0xwIjuHjj_gZNE0jI568/s400/27315917.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5th Grade students and I discussed the definition monochromatic. We broke this vocabulary word apart to see if they could figure out what the word meant. I questioned what prefix was contained in the word and many students were able to identify "mono". Most of my classes had at least a student or two that knew that "mono" meant one or single. Then we looked at the second part of the word, "chroma" which students didn't know at all. We looked up the definition using Google. I took this opportunity to show students a better way to search a definition on Google. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We typed in "definition: chroma" into the omnibox and up popped the following:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj27MXZPPVA8hoA4YXQFUtGvSM6ifb8XhlV2CT2fgQeIM1LSAFW54TRywUvFOr2IppPf4tcfAtkL1TUCx8j6_yXLe1V3sc6E7dOuhEBcq22JTlE6A1SsCQT5Eu-WTDknhD-4RJVcIUxBt2M/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-01-02+at+5.48.17+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="142" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj27MXZPPVA8hoA4YXQFUtGvSM6ifb8XhlV2CT2fgQeIM1LSAFW54TRywUvFOr2IppPf4tcfAtkL1TUCx8j6_yXLe1V3sc6E7dOuhEBcq22JTlE6A1SsCQT5Eu-WTDknhD-4RJVcIUxBt2M/s400/Screen+Shot+2014-01-02+at+5.48.17+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I then asked what they thought "monochromatic" might mean. Students responded with "one color?' Yay!! Now I know, why not just have them search for "monochromatic" in Google? Because...I love to engage students in thinking as much as I love them to engage in technology. Breaking apart words makes them think! I'm betting these students will have no problem figuring out what a monoprint is later in the year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ok...back to the project. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Students chose a color (primary or secondary) and practiced making tints and shades while painting a monochromatic sky. When they got to the ground they were able to chose any color they wished to paint it. Some students created a tint or shade when painting the ground. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next class we talked a bit about Abstract and Contemporary Art. I showed them some Abstract tree paintings from some contemporary artists. They painted their trees using black or black mixed with brown. Some students created more realistic looking trees while others created more swirly branches. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The last class students used oil pastels to add circles or swirls or both to their paintings. They controlled what colors they were using. We did discuss how lighter colors might look better on the shade part of the painting and darker colors would look good on the tinted areas of the painting. </div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><i>Color Think Dots - used as a formative assessment for third grade</i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFgI0EC6ZqF3UQLxQ2jGzfEdE-wvX_4qlrYs7qhjGzrqbkkZHlh41tZ7sVEFiZNtGXZn8Qc00aPC6m8_wjsGg-zgRzBEAyUzstPg5M-LxPmZfJPUg8iC0fwG01ol-HQFJvwl6P08rAIzSJ/s1600/IMG_1062.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFgI0EC6ZqF3UQLxQ2jGzfEdE-wvX_4qlrYs7qhjGzrqbkkZHlh41tZ7sVEFiZNtGXZn8Qc00aPC6m8_wjsGg-zgRzBEAyUzstPg5M-LxPmZfJPUg8iC0fwG01ol-HQFJvwl6P08rAIzSJ/s320/IMG_1062.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My third grade students were finishing a project at different stages. Since I have only 6 iPads for my students to use, we often work on multiple projects when it involves using them. Third grade students were typing in their Color Letters <i>(Post to come later on this creative project!)</i> as they finished up on the drawing part of the project. I assigned this Think Dots sheet for students to work on as they waited for their turn on one of the iPads or when they finished. This both gave them something to do that reviewed their color knowledge and showed me where we still needed to focus our learning. Since it involved painting and rolling dice - they were into it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Each table was given a laminated Think Dots sheet (laminating will save it for use over and over again) and a die. They were showed how to fold a 12x18 paper into 6 sections. They were to roll the die and do what was asked of them on the Think Dots sheet. They could re-roll but eventually all tasks should be completed. Generally in a Think Dots activities, there are varying levels of difficulty or thinking. The task contained lots of choices that let the students show their creativity. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For example - "Paint a design in a section using Primary colors." This gives students the opportunity to paint anything they wish. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLbvpfoiCnPR4dDUh754piDvt8_rkMFBplZzr-_ha7jQ2xkdz_sG_NXAc7_DMxJTGInnE22o4xAmGT3nxTUYLx6M7ZwnsGdWIOgLv6GfxcwdmcCGp7Ef7gPL_ZqSjOQjSsngst4y7GCkz6/s1600/IMG_1061.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLbvpfoiCnPR4dDUh754piDvt8_rkMFBplZzr-_ha7jQ2xkdz_sG_NXAc7_DMxJTGInnE22o4xAmGT3nxTUYLx6M7ZwnsGdWIOgLv6GfxcwdmcCGp7Ef7gPL_ZqSjOQjSsngst4y7GCkz6/s320/IMG_1061.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When students are finished with these, I will be able to look them over and gather data on how many students completed each task correctly. That data will guide my teaching on the next lesson we do. If all students have mastered most tasks then we can move on to a new concept. I may find that many students still need some extra time learning a certain concept. </div>

<span style="font-size: large;">About a month ago I had the pleasure of sharing a wonderful book with my students. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">It's a story that reminds us, as artists, to be true to ourselves. Young Sarah was caught by her teacher drawing in class. Her classmates discovered her artistic talent and began to ask her to draw all kinds of things for them. </span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">My students enjoyed the book. A couple of classes even asked me to read it a second time! After reading the book I asked the students to be book reviewers with me. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Here's some of the things they had to say:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">"I like that it is funny." "I love the rhyming words." "I've never seen a book before that lets you draw in the last pages!" <i>(The end of the book contains a small sketchbook for students to draw whatever they want.)</i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Things that I liked about this book:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">One of the first things I noticed was it taught many of my students a new vocabulary word. It was in bold so the students knew they needed to stop and figure out what it meant. </span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuGdBjheBsMa3MjcAr7co2RmsefX79SbIQ6i5-eAmWg4US_2N_H5cvUzkCFp_8M_b1yb7JhV-jN8jBbsUhKBNXpahzPZTnXwlOEackAsRr62zHQ-p7V4-GApeC_pt1Xk3LrHrPLoVY6Esw/s1600/IMG_4721.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuGdBjheBsMa3MjcAr7co2RmsefX79SbIQ6i5-eAmWg4US_2N_H5cvUzkCFp_8M_b1yb7JhV-jN8jBbsUhKBNXpahzPZTnXwlOEackAsRr62zHQ-p7V4-GApeC_pt1Xk3LrHrPLoVY6Esw/s320/IMG_4721.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Another important aspect of the book I enjoyed was the message. It told students to be their own artist. What they want to draw and express is far more important than what others may want. Be true to yourself!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I congratulate M. D. Savran on a wonderful book that every art teacher should share with students!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
Up until a year or so ago, I had no idea what needle felting was. I started to pin some of these cute little sculptures on Pinterest and made a mental note to find more out about how these were done. I've never met an art form I didn't like. I love to try new things! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<br />
So, when I saw that there was a felting workshop during the IAEA Conference I made a point (no pun intended) to quickly sign up for it. I wasn't disappointed! Natasha from <a href="http://esthersplacefibers.com/">Esther's Place Fiber Studio</a> taught us about wet felting and needle felting. I had a blast! My first sculpture needed a lot of work - My owl looked a bit tipsy!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsesSicoAsg8TBqye-dbj5QaPbHwVl4PR4G0od2A3Q-jjF7c6YrXiRUVIk2hj3FNNjD8h04_xmSj425rd6X_sOtMmFt_UnLORXxfRfq2a-so1uiTBrCQIyQZf04UQamiM6IUDsC21_twFq/s1600/IMG_4447.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsesSicoAsg8TBqye-dbj5QaPbHwVl4PR4G0od2A3Q-jjF7c6YrXiRUVIk2hj3FNNjD8h04_xmSj425rd6X_sOtMmFt_UnLORXxfRfq2a-so1uiTBrCQIyQZf04UQamiM6IUDsC21_twFq/s320/IMG_4447.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The next morning I purchased a starter kit so that I could do more at home. Even better - the last day of the conference at the raffle I won a big basket of 65 balls of wool! So Excited!!<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx9oMCcVN5Ur7fP035YXXgvY0Wa3FvG2aFTcX8WiUGooXIVDoSFqQnpYMpr6mb_cVVXBWPkx5Evzc7uaH6OJyOCE03qCJQ7qtLlYuKlOtU8G_tsmU3O1NdwIOOTAdYH4ZiDjGFrQXanz9B/s1600/1452253_10200989190471803_1753482712_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx9oMCcVN5Ur7fP035YXXgvY0Wa3FvG2aFTcX8WiUGooXIVDoSFqQnpYMpr6mb_cVVXBWPkx5Evzc7uaH6OJyOCE03qCJQ7qtLlYuKlOtU8G_tsmU3O1NdwIOOTAdYH4ZiDjGFrQXanz9B/s320/1452253_10200989190471803_1753482712_n.jpg" width="214" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So first chance I got I tossed all my school work aside and began to create a felted turkey sculpture. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Here's some of the work in progress:</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I like how my turkey came out and look forward to creating again. I'd love to take this skill into my classroom. I think my 5th graders would enjoy doing it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Have any of you ever needle felted with students in school? If so how did it go? Please share your experiences! </div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The annual Illinois Art Education Association Conference was this past Friday and Saturday. Although I have been teaching for over 18 years, and have attended a handful of national conferences, I had never attended my own state's conference. So this was my first, but not my last, time attending.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
I went to as many workshops and presentations as I could. Many were full of ideas that I could take back to my art students - both my K-5 students and my ArtsyBug Studio students of all ages. Some gave me ideas to pass on to my colleagues who teach middle or high school. Some of the sessions gave me ideas for my own artwork. A few provided some new ideas or things to add to projects or lessons I already do.<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
Here's a glimpse of what I took away from some of the presentations I attended:<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>Everything Apple: Getting Techie</i></span><br />
Technology is a big part of my teaching and daily life. I use technology in the art room and I teach about using technology both to my elementary students and Art Education teachers for <a href="http://www.theartofed.com/">The Art of Ed</a>. I am an Apple lover....the Mac kind...not granny smith. So I was excited to see what ideas a group of great art teachers had for using Apple products in the art room. Among the group were the ladies from <a href="http://theteachingpalette.com/">The Teaching Palette</a> - <a href="https://twitter.com/theresamcgee">Theresa McGee</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/hilland">Hillary Andrlik</a>.<br />
Some great ideas that came from here:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Tips for Artsonia</li>
<ul>
<li>Using QR Codes to have students access the site to complete artist statements on <a href="http://www.artsonia.com/schools/school.asp?id=40926">Artsonia </a>(new classroom mode)</li>
<li>Create an iPad stand to help students photograph artwork. Now to find someone to make this for me - times 2...one for each of my buildings with Artsonia galleries.</li>
<li>Using the microphone built into the newest iOS update on the iPads to differentiate. Students who need to can speak their artist statements instead of type.</li>
</ul>
<li>Ideas for <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/brushes-3/id545366251?mt=8">Brushes</a> or <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/sketchbook-express-for-ipad/id410871280?mt=8">Sketchbook X</a> with other apps</li>
<ul>
<li>Trees in perspective - Traditional painting combined with Brushes to duplicate, resize, and paint background. Then use Animator Free to animate it snowing.</li>
<li>Photograph a figure then use Brushes to erase background and create a digital one</li>
</ul>
<li>GarageBand or Screen Chomp to add student talking about artwork and/or process they took.</li>
<li>Skitch to teach 1 point perspective.</li>
<ul>
<li>Students photograph part of the hallway and then mark up arrows to the vanishing point.</li>
</ul>
<li>iBook Author - So many possibilities!</li>
<ul>
<li>Could be used as assessment</li>
<li>Use to add poem to artwork then video tape student reading using Photobooth</li>
<li>Creative writing and SoundCloud - record story or writing about artwork using GarageBand</li>
</ul>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">When Animals Attack...the Art Room! </span><i>- <a href="https://twitter.com/VisualDeyana">Deyana Matt</a></i></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>This presentation gave me a ton of ideas for lessons using animals! </li>
</ul>
Here are my favorites - </div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Meeting Common Core in the Art Classroom </span>- <i>Let me preface this by saying that I'm not a fan of the whole CCS movement for reasons I'm not going into here. But it is here and we need to show that the Arts can and do play a major role in the whole education of our students. </i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>This session took a look at the Common Core ELA and Math Standards and how we as art educators can meet many of these standards in our art program. Ideas for focusing first on the anchor standards were shared. There was quite a lot of information here that would take up an entire post so I'm not going to go into all of it.</li>
<li>Let me just say that we don't need to change our whole curriculum to help meet these standards. Take a look at what you already do and see where you can expand to meet those standards.</li>

<span style="font-size: large;">I used it as an introduction to the abstract artwork of Pablo Picasso for my 3rd grade students.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSMLGeisCiAk-ho69XKZ3Q_XWIofSATfRtP1af6EqYvPvniBmBEfLrkhQw-P90yCNJn6NJnn8YymZPOjG2yYuBAZ89IecJjPeiMiXJMssKsaSrzbAqR-UMQdaMQsE6-GgS5x1y08DeA1A-/s1600/IMG_0964.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSMLGeisCiAk-ho69XKZ3Q_XWIofSATfRtP1af6EqYvPvniBmBEfLrkhQw-P90yCNJn6NJnn8YymZPOjG2yYuBAZ89IecJjPeiMiXJMssKsaSrzbAqR-UMQdaMQsE6-GgS5x1y08DeA1A-/s320/IMG_0964.JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">We talked a bit about color choices when they picked the colors for the face. Looking at the color wheel we discussed what colors would be contrasting and stand out next to each other and which ones might blend more together. Ultimately, they could chose any two colors they wanted!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">We also discussed what a profile was and how it differed from seeing a face from the front view. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Students had a lot of fun creating their witch or monster. We started by cutting out a face shape from the two colors they chose for the face stacked together. Then they drew a profile on one of the pieces, cut it out, and glued it to the full face shape. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I gave them examples and tips for cutting certain shapes like the mouth but gave them lots of room for creative choices. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">For some reason they kept questioning me on what they could or couldn't do with this project. "Can I make it have elf ears?" "Can mine have a mustache?" "Can I do a different kind of hat?" "Can she have a booger?" My answer - <b style="font-style: italic;">"You are the artist. You make the decisions!" </b>I use this answer quite a bit. It usually brings a smile to their face.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">I'm always a bit cautious of doing this project. I don't want to those students who might not be able to do Halloween themed things because of religious beliefs to feel uncomfortable. If I know ahead of time there are students who might not be able to do witches I modify it to monsters or let chose what they might do using the same skills.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Like this project but too late for Halloween...you could a similar project before Christmas and do <i>What If Picasso made Elves?</i></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<i><b><span style="font-size: large;">How do you handle projects that might be off limits to certain students because of religious beliefs?</span></b></i><br />

They were then able to paint their landscapes with a creative color scheme. It was a blast seeing them get creative with the color.<br />
I encouraged them to use different colors in each section of ground.<br />
<br />
<br />
Once painting was dry, students reviewed line quality and watched a couple videos on <a href="http://youtu.be/C4Nlz4XMxcs">zentangle drawings</a> and then they began to fill the sections of their painting with different lines. Most of the lines were drawing using colored pencils. Some were done using black marker.<br />
<br />
I love the variety the students ended up having in the finished works!<br />

In my quest this year to allow students as much creative expression and freedom within the boundaries of learning outcomes I felt a new approach to our color unit in my upper-elementary classes was in order. Instead of going over the color wheel as a lesson to introduce our color unit, I decided to give the students a chance to experiment and explore color mixing on their own before we even discuss Primary, Secondary, Intermediate, Warm, Cool,....and all the other color schemes we want our students to understand and be able to use in their artwork.<br />
<br />
So much fun! The kids loved it and I loved hearing their conversations as they worked. "Hey, I just made sea green!" "Ewwww....this looks like my baby brothers diaper!" "How did you make that color? That is so cool!"<br />
<br />
Some students chose to just paint blobs or lines as they mixed while others thought about using their mixed colors to paint images. They all were sad when clean up time arrived but by then they had used most, if not all, of the paint on their palette.<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">By the end of Second Grade I want my students to be able to describe and draw directional lines. I want them to be able to tell you which way a horizontal, vertical, and diagonal or oblique lines goes. I also want them to be able to use these different lines in an artwork. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">This year we are learning and practicing this knowledge by painting pumpkins. Not just ordinary orange painted pumpkins - but pumpkins filled with lines. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Students had fun mixing colors as they painted. They used horizontal lines in the background and vertical and diagonal lines in the pumpkin. They were able to be as creative as they wanted. Some added lots of lines and different colors while others kept is simple and limited their lines.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

One of the first things I focus on with my elementary students is to introduce or review the use of line quality in an artwork. I've done this in a variety of ways over the years with the different grade levels. One of the projects we are working on this year is animals with zentangle-like designs added to them. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
At one of my schools I decided to focus on the theme of animals in art. So this project seemed to fit right in. I focused on my 4th and 5th graders for this project.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We spent an art time drawing out an animal of their choice. My goal this year is to give students as much creative choice as possible within the confines of what I want them to learn or be able to do by the end of each project. So the choice of animal was extended to include imaginary, combined, or "creatures" of any kind they wished to create.</div>
<div>
Once their drawing was done, I went over a few different watercolor painting techniques. We went over wet into dry, wet into wet, and adding salt to obtain different results. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When the paintings were dry we discussed line quality and I showed some examples of zentangles. I showed the students some parts of <a href="http://www.artwithmrsg.com/videos.html">YouTube videos by the artist Milliande</a> that I have linked on my Art with Mrs. G website. I also showed them my finished giraffe. I had a blast making it and wanted to let them know that. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Students are still working on their animals but here are some sneak peeks of them in progress -</div>

<br />
I have a lot of things listed on my To-Do list that I keep in my iPhone "Reminder" app. It seems as I check one off I add at least a couple more. One that has been on the list for quite awhile is making an Art Room job poster for my 3 schools. I assign various jobs to students each art time. I do this by selecting a certain number that corresponds to a student at the table. I have a colored mat on each table that has numbers painting on it. You can see this in the picture below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLBeD6dL06IU2e3MKayKrg9tklZh_3flDD72peLfQ9f8vpItbO3enFA5gHVHQA3HmdnROChK58vLXEaZKDy7GFpd3aq70D3OVEb_1lqKbwwRQ2q0imFshMym1JkXbsVj8ifx7NLmCuvRy2/s1600/IMG_4143.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLBeD6dL06IU2e3MKayKrg9tklZh_3flDD72peLfQ9f8vpItbO3enFA5gHVHQA3HmdnROChK58vLXEaZKDy7GFpd3aq70D3OVEb_1lqKbwwRQ2q0imFshMym1JkXbsVj8ifx7NLmCuvRy2/s320/IMG_4143.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Our school district uses Kagan Cooperative learning techniques and the numbers are used for that. They do come in handy even more in Art to have different students do different things. So each week I might say 1s are in charge of collecting folders and 2s are taking care of water cups. If a number I called wasn't there the job went to their shoulder partner. Sounds good right?<br />
Well...it was until I kept forgetting to mark down who did what when so that the jobs would rotate around the table. With 3 schools, 27 classes, and let's face it age it just stopped being easy to keep track of. I'd ask the first class that came in for the week, "Who were folder helpers last week?" Of course more than one hand would go up at each table.<br />
<br />
So I wanted to create a poster to help the students and myself know just who's turn it was to do what. I had a design in mind and finally this past week finished making 3 of them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I laminated the palette, brush, and paint splats with jobs written on them. I laminated the numbered circles separately. I chose 5 jobs that are needed most in my rooms. "Dusty's Helper" refers to my dustpan and broom that has a face painted on it. "Dusty's his name...cleaning's his game." Adhesive backed velcro on the numbers lets me rotate them each week. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Kindergarten students learned a little about the artwork of John James Audubon with this lesson. We looked at some of his bird paintings and talked about how he observed birds in nature to see what they really looked like. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidJfMMZZ1vB1PPUwnQb4wnzNCHHc9Z7vYTUayUwvjD82PnEH2F5blpm8e2luqwrav0vT0dwZpRHWDBIP94iYNvauAAM058MkvED2TachGrnaB5ZVxqtTwVu4n9bD85wdcbpsb2sRvekkV-/s1600/610_audubon_intro.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="162" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidJfMMZZ1vB1PPUwnQb4wnzNCHHc9Z7vYTUayUwvjD82PnEH2F5blpm8e2luqwrav0vT0dwZpRHWDBIP94iYNvauAAM058MkvED2TachGrnaB5ZVxqtTwVu4n9bD85wdcbpsb2sRvekkV-/s320/610_audubon_intro.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We discussed what drawing from <b><i>observation</i></b> meant. Since we couldn't go outside in the cold and get a bird to sit still for us, we did our observation from photographs. I picked out a handful of birds that students would have seen in our area - Northwest Illinois - and printed out pictures for students to look at. We had just done a lesson in shape. We discussed the two kinds of shapes - geometric and organic (free-form) shapes before the students started drawing the bird they picked to do. I continued to remind students to look at the bird and see what shapes they saw and draw what they saw. One student got to giggling at me because I kept repeating "as you draw look at the picture then back to your paper...then back to the picture. Look at the picture...look at the paper...look at the picture..." He repeated "picture - paper- picture-paper" while giggling. But they got the idea and all really looked at the shapes they saw!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
After drawing with pencils, I had the students go over the lines with a black Sharpie marker. The next class students painting their birds. Again they picked up the bird photos so that they could look at the colors as they painted. The birds below were painted with tempera cakes. <b>Our chalk cupcakes got even sweeter when we had fun with iPad apps!</b><br />
<br />
I photographed the students' chalk cupcakes for Artsonia, as I do with the majority of artwork created. Because I planned on having the students use these images on the iPads, I also created folders in Dropbox with each class's pics.<br />
My 4th grade students (and a few 5th graders in my 4/5 split) learned how to find their cupcake image in Dropbox and download it to the camera roll, on the iPad they were using. I introduced two apps to the whole class using the iPad connected to the projector. I showed the students how to open the app, upload their picture from the camera roll, and how to adjust settings until they liked the creation. I then showed them how to email the finished image to me. I didn't spend a long time on this demo in front of the whole class though. Instead I spent more time with the first 6 students (I currently have 6 iPads) on teaching them more in depth. Then after they finished their digital images, those students chose another student to teach. This cycle continued until all students were finished. By learning and then teaching to another person you retain more knowledge.<br />
<br />
One of the apps we used was the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/percolator/id385454903?mt=8">Percolator App</a>. It has a lot of manipulations and adjustments that can really transform one artwork into another!<br />

<b>4th Grade students learned about American artist Wayne Thiebaud while creating these yummy-looking artworks.</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
After we spent some time learning about Thiebaud, students were able to practice using chalk pastels to make a drawing of a ball. We went through how to make an object look more 3-dimensional by using highlights and shadows. They practice blending and keeping fingerprints and smudges off their work. We also talked about being safe and smart with the dust that is created. No blowing or wiping away the dust. Instead it is tapped off into a garbage can.<br />
<br />
The next class students worked on their cupcake. I think the practice they had really helped students feel more confident about created their cupcake.<br />
<br />
Here's some of my favorites -<br />

<br />
This first semester we've been enjoying our 6 iPads in my art rooms. Students have to take turns or work in groups but they don't seem to mind. They all love working with them. We will be working on creating original works directly on the iPad soon, but for now we have been using them to transform our traditional works in a few different ways.<br />
<br />
The first example of this is adding words to the Grant Wood inspired Landscape Collages. After students finished their collage works, they used the app <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wordfoto/id414002091?mt=8" target="_blank">WordFoto</a> to add a set of words to their art. Students learned how to use the iPad to photograph the artwork. Then they added 5-6 words that were inspired by their artwork. The first word they were asked to add was their name.<br />
<br />
Here's one of the traditional works -<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1PJHIAnrabylJrPWQ2ViOQnKEjm9ijWZcTRdPM-5CDCSIYgCrFgmr8hlUm8hUywEEmaQ9MtULPy97eN5mSDAJDPRpAMy_iqEJx-m9A2w_9nKgy3gOxUY3knaAPjrDO2YU8joZdoQiIYtP/s1600/21908679.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; display: inline !important; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1PJHIAnrabylJrPWQ2ViOQnKEjm9ijWZcTRdPM-5CDCSIYgCrFgmr8hlUm8hUywEEmaQ9MtULPy97eN5mSDAJDPRpAMy_iqEJx-m9A2w_9nKgy3gOxUY3knaAPjrDO2YU8joZdoQiIYtP/s320/21908679.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here's her work full of words - </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6GORm3zM_HyPjO-4Zh_1PFsDkY5CzI5CBT0HGKEg4pTzP4aszGhW6owGq2r-EB1ycQqIfsMFTgvC8zLEqUoOhdiKnHkggaeplUCLXDaQ40WczpOtfnc1b-qM1Id3_8YWEfGePAetKoVXH/s1600/22173849.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6GORm3zM_HyPjO-4Zh_1PFsDkY5CzI5CBT0HGKEg4pTzP4aszGhW6owGq2r-EB1ycQqIfsMFTgvC8zLEqUoOhdiKnHkggaeplUCLXDaQ40WczpOtfnc1b-qM1Id3_8YWEfGePAetKoVXH/s320/22173849.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The WordFoto app is customizable so that students can pick different fonts, colors, and other options to make their work as individual as them! They had fun playing around with the settings.</div>

The best part of this project was how the students worked on it. I showed the whole class using the iPad hooked up to the projector so they could see how it was done. Then while most of the class worked on another project, 6 students came back to an area of the room to work with the iPads. I helped these students on the steps, answering their questions and showing them some options. When they were finished I showed them how to email the image to me. Then the magic began - these students were asked to go bring another classmate back to the table and they taught that student by using words or pointing (not doing it for them) how to use the app and then how to email it. So by the time everyone's work was done they had been taught how to use the app and then they taught someone else how to use it!</div>

<b>3rd Grade students created these painted paper collage works inspired by Grant Wood. </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
The concept of Intermediate colors (Tertiary colors) has been one that my students sometimes have a tough time getting. I would go over the color wheel with them, but we didn't spend much time on it. This year I decided to try something a bit different with my Grant Wood landscape collage project. We spent a couple art classes making painted papers (which students love to do!). I had students pair up so that they could work together. They chose a primary and a secondary color by it to mix into an intermediate color. They mixed the color together on a paper plate and each painted a paper. They used some painting combs or craft sticks to draw some texture into the paint before putting it on the drying rack. The goal was for each pair to mix all six intermediate colors in the two painting classes.</div>

Once we had our papers painted, the students took a look at landscape paintings by Grant Wood. We talked about his use of overlapping and shape. They chose a construction paper for the "sky" color and began to cut and put together their own landscape collage. I encouraged student to split their papers in half (the long way) and trade one of the halves with another student so they would have even more variety for their collage.</div>

The subject for our movie was a red ball that would roll into a scene, interact with that environment, change and then roll out into another scene. The students brainstormed ideas and then we put them together to flow with whatever color or colors of clay balls that were exciting and entering each scene. I was so proud of how the students worked together in small groups and then as a whole group. Even though no actual art was produced that art class - it was one of my favorites. The creativity and problem solving skills they were using put a huge smile on my face!<br />
<br />

I gave each group a 12x18 piece of tagboard to fold to create the backdrop. They glued construction paper onto this, colored on it with various materials, and glued extra things on as needed. We propped these up by taping some metal book stands borrowed from the library to the back.<br />
<br />
Students used modeling clay and other items to create things in their scene that the clay ball would interact with.<br />
<br />
Once the back drop was done we began filming. We made sure we all had the clay balls that were coming and going from scene to scene all ready before we started filming. We doubled up on these so that many groups could film at the same time. For example if a green ball was leaving one scene and would be entering another, we created 2 identical balls so that both groups could be filming at the same time.<br />
<br />
The iPad app <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/imotion-hd/id421365625?mt=8" target="_blank">iMotion HD</a> made this so easy! This app is free and a must have for the art room! Our iPads have smart covers so they were able to be propped up and worked great to keep the iPad in the same spot. After a group finished filming they exported the movie to the photo library and then put it into my Dropbox file. I could then take all the movies and put them together in iMovie on my computer.<br />
